Four Reasons for High Electric Bills

High electric bills can come as a major shock. Here are five reasons you may be paying more for your electricity:

Reason #1: Unplugged or Running Appliances

When appliances like TVs or game consoles that don’t get turned off properly stay plugged in all day, the can continue to use energy, even if they are not in use. Be sure to properly turn off or unplug your devices and appliances that are not in use!

Reason #2: Non-Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

As we’ve mentioned in a previous blog, LED light bulbs are a great way to save money and make your electricity usage efficient.  Using 90% less energy than traditional light bulbs, LEDs nearly last forever.

Reason #3: Unseen Issues

If your energy bill is high, it may be time for an energy audit. Things a small as improperly sealed doors and windows can cause your energy bill to spike, especially in moths with extreme heat or colder weather. Read about energy audits in one of our previous blogs here!

Reason #4: Your Fridge is Working Overtime

While putting still-warm food in your refrigerator isn’t going to damage the appliance in any way, it does cause a spike in temperature. This means your fridge works harder to bring its temperature back down, which puts stress on the compressor. While doing this every once in a while won’t hinder your energy efficiency, regularly doing this can add to your energy waste.
